The infamous Jussie Smollett case took yet another disturbing turn on Monday. Documents reveal that special prosecutor Dan K. Webb, who was brought in to investigate why the office of State Attorney Kim Foxx abruptly dropped all charges against the “Empire” star, had donated $1,000 to the top prosecutor’s campaign. Webb’s firm even hosted a 2016 fundraiser for Foxx. Can you say ‘conflict of interest’?
Fox News reported that special prosecutor Dan K. Webb filed a document in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday in which he claimed to not remember writing a $1,000 check to Foxx. He also alleged that he did not recall his high-powered firm, Winston & Strawn, hosting a fundraiser for her three years ago.
In his filing, Webb included a copy of the flyer advertising the fundraiser, which stated that lawyers in the firm including Webb, a Republican, supported Foxx, a Democrat, in her run to become State Attorney.
“I should point out that it is common for Winston partners to host fundraisers for political candidates at our firm,” Webb wrote to Judge Michael Toomin, who last month appointed the U.S. attorney as special prosecutor. “It is also common that my Winston partners request that I contribute to these fundraisers.”

Webb was reportedly one of three attorneys who was listed as a “host” of the campaign fundraiser.
Webb went on to say that this matter was brought to his attention last week by Foxx’s attorney Michael Bromwich. Bromwich said the State’s Attorney will not claim any conflict of interest or make “any other objection related to this contribution.”
During a hearing that is scheduled for Friday, Webb will be discussing the political contribution he made to Foxx with Judge Toomin.
Back in February, police charged Smollett with 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself. The actor claimed two men had assaulted him in downtown Chicago. And that his attackers used homophobic and racist slurs while also screaming “this is MAGA country”. The Chicago Police Department quickly came to the conclusion that Smollett had staged the incident, with them saying his motive was to secure a pay raise on “Empire.”

The Chicago Police Department was then livid when Foxx suddenly and inexplicably dropped all charges against Smollett. Especially given Smollett faced decades in prison, if convicted, by that point. The backlash over Foxx’s decision spurred Webb’s appointment as special prosecutor to investigate.
Webb’s conflict of interest in regards to his prior donation to Foxx is just another disturbing twist in this case. Is it too much to ask that an unbiased individual be the one to review Foxx’s handling of Smollett’s case? Judge Toomin should remove Webb from this case, and hastily appoint a new prosecutor to handle this matter.
