The plan is to have Tony Ferguson challenge UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov next, and “El Cucuy” is driving to have the fight go down before 2019 is up.

Ferguson’s title shot run

For months there was talk that the UFC might grant Conor McGregor his wish, and book him for a rematch with Nurmagomedov. But, thankfully, Dana White has acknowledged that Ferguson should be next for the undefeated champ. After all, Ferguson has won 12 straight fights, and he also secured the interim belt during that time.

“El Cucuy’s” gory call out

Well, following Khabib’s submission win over Dustin Porier earlier this month, Ferguson has also been doing his part to lock-up a title fight. More recently, Ferguson shared out the gory call out below (warning: graphic image and language):

This past weekend the UFC confirmed that Max Holloway will defend the featherweight title against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245. So, it would be kind of surprising then if the UFC added another title fight – especially one as big as Khabib – Ferguson – to it. That aside, hopefully Nurmagomedov versus Ferguson does become a reality, and soon.

Most recently, at UFC 238 in June, Ferguson recorded a TKO win (via doctor stoppage) over Donald Cerrone.
