It wasn’t that long ago really, when Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington were referring to each other as friends. But, as we approach mid-September, it looks like tensions between the American Top Team fighters are escalating quickly.

Covington called Masvidal his “best friend” just last month

If you’ve followed Covington the last couple of years, then you know “Chaos” has alienated plenty of fans and fighters with his trash-taking act and controversial statements he’s made. For the most part, Masvidal stood by Covington.

Well, late last month, Covington referred to Masvidal as a “journeyman”, while discussing the possibility of a fight between “Gamebred” and Nate Diaz materializing. Covington also, however, claimed Masvidal was still his “best friend”.

Masvidal fires off a warning shot

Well, since then, Diaz – Masvidal has been booked for the November 2nd, UFC 244 card. The fight will serve as the headliner for the event, after it had been reported the UFC was hoping to book Kamaru Usman – Covington for the card. More recently, Covington and Masvidal got into it on Twitter in regards to the event, and while talking to ESPN this week, the latter said this (quotes via MMA Mania):

“He had to tell Dana White I was trying to assault him and Dana White came over to me like I’m in kindergarten talking about, ‘Don’t give out no three piece and soda,’” Masvidal said, while apparently referring to White’s report some fighters wanted to get at Covington at UFC 241. “I go, ‘What the f–k are you talking about Dana,’ and he goes, ‘No, Colby’s telling me you’re trying to f–king assault him and you can’t do that,’ and I go, ‘Man, this guy’s such a b-tch,’ I told him, ‘Let’s talk like men, why are you lying and doing all this sh-t, for a like? For a f–king fan or a follow?’”

”This dude needs to slow dow, I mean he knows better than most who the f–k I am,” Masvidal continued. “I’ll be at the gym. Colby, if you’re hearing this, you little b-tch, because you will, because he acts like he is not sensitive at all, but he’s the most sensitive dude I’ve ever met. He cries when he reads comments.”

So, ya. It certainly sounds like Masvidal’s no longer a fan of Covington, or least the “Chaos” bit he’s been rolling with. You have to wonder at what point Covington might have to leave ATT? If he continues to have issues with fighters that train out of the gym? Recently Dustin Poirier also made it clear that he has some issues with Covington.

All this aside, it will be interesting to see if and when Usman – Covington gets booked. Recently the latter claim the UFC came with a “challenger” offer that he couldn’t accept.
