Felicity Huffman Receives Her Sentence In College Admissions Scandal

Moments ago, “Desperate Housewives” actress Felicity Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison as well as a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community service and one year supervised release.

During sentencing, Judge Indira Talwani told Huffman that she knew what she was doing was wrong.

“She knew it was a fraud it was not an impulsive act,” the judge said. “Trying to be a good mother doesn’t excuse this.”

US Attorney Says Just Probation Is Not Enough For Huffman

CNN reported that during sentencing, Huffman broke down as she addressed the judge, saying “I am deeply ashamed of what I have done. At the end of the day I had a choice to make. I could have said ‘no.’”

“I take full responsibility,” Huffman continued. “I will accept whatever punishment you give me.”

Assistant US Attorney Eric Rosen said that “there is no excuse for what she did.”

“Most parents have the moral compass and integrity not to step over the line. The defendant did not,” Rosen said.

Huffman’s lawyers had asked for a sentence of one year of probation, 250 hours of community service and a $20,000 fine. However, Rosen went on to argue that this sentence would not be enough of a punishment for Huffman.

“A message must be sent and imprisonment is the only way to send that message,” he said. “She did this once and she planned on doing this again.”

Huffman Begs Judge For Leniency

This comes after Huffman plead guilty to paying $15,000 to have someone correct her daughter’s answers on the SAT. Before sentencing, she wrote a letter to the judge begging for leniency.

“In my desperation to be a good mother I talked myself into believing that all I was doing was giving my daughter a fair shot,” Huffman wrote in the letter. “I see the irony in that statement now because what I have done is the opposite of fair. I have broken the law, deceived the educational community, betrayed my daughter, and failed my family.”

The “Desperate Housewives” actress went on to say that upon learning of her arrest, her teenage daughter Sophia “asked with tears streaming down her face, ‘Why didn’t you believe in me? Why didn’t you think I could do it on my own?’”

Huffman’s Husband William H. Macy Supports Her

Her husband William H. Macy, also a Hollywood star, wrote a letter to the judge on Huffman’s behalf in which he said that though his wife is a devoted parent, she has “always struggled to find the balance between what the experts say, and her own common sense.” Macy also said that their family has been struggling to heal since her arrest, and that they have been attending family therapy.
