After Nate Diaz defeated Anthony Pettis last month, he buzzed the MMA world by calling out Jorge Masvidal. Well, now Dana White’s confirmed the welterweights will throw down on November 2nd in New York City. Not only that, the fight will serve as the headliner for UFC 244.
Diaz calls out Masvidal
Diaz (20-11) returned to the cage for the first time since 2016 at UFC 241, and worked his way to a decision win over Pettis. Following the fight, Diaz respectfully challenged Masvidal to fight. Not surprisingly, “Gamebred” made it clear that he was more than interested in the match-up.
White confirms the bout
More recently, White spoke with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, and he confirmed Diaz and Masvidal are going to throw hands in Madison Square Garden. Not only that, the fight will be the card’s main event, even though it will not be a championship fight.
“It is the fight fans wanted to see,” White said. “Nate Diaz called out Masvidal after his win over [Anthony] Pettis. Everybody has been talking about it. People have been hitting me up on social media, telling me to get it done. I can now announce the fight is done.”
“It’s one of those fights that is fun, interesting, fans are into it, you want to see for five rounds — yet it’s too big to be a fight night,” White told Okamoto. “So we made it a pay-per-view. I will end up stacking this card with killer fights. The main event will be those two.”
So, this is massive and welcome news. Hopefully, this indicates the UFC is now more open to having all-star fights headline PPV cards, even if they’re not title fights. Now it will be interesting to see what other fights get added to the card.
Masvidal (34-13) is coming back-to-back, electrifying knockout wins over Darren Till and Ben Askren.
