Tyron Woodley let it be known in the past that he’s interested in fighting Nate and Nick Diaz. But now the former welterweight champ’s says he’s thinking about contacting the Stockton stars to see if they’d be up for some training.
Not long ago, Woodley made news by reporting that he had done some training with Tristar’s renowned coach Firas Zahabi. The heavy-handed fighter said the training went “phenomenal”, so much so, he was going to train at Tristar and alongside the gym’s most famous fighter, Georges St-Pierre.
Well, since then, Woodley held a social media chat session with fans. While talking about Nick and Nate Diaz, the 37-year-old said this (quotes via BJ Penn.com):
“You know what? At one point in time I really wanted to fight Nate, not because I thought he was weak, not because I thought it was an easy fight or I wanted his clout. I thought he was a beast, I thought Nate was a beast, I thought GSP was a beast, Bisping was a beast, Carlos Condit. That’s why I wanted to fight those guys. Now I’m in a position where it does not make sense for me probably to fight them.”
“I’m thinking about reaching out and training [with them]. What ya’ll think about that? I’m training with GSP here soon. I already started training with Firas [Zahabi] a couple of sessions. What do y’all think about me training with Nate or Nick?”
How about that huh? Now, will this happen? You never know right? Woodley has trained with Roufusport and American Top Team in recent years, and now he’s also added Tristar and the world famous boxing gym, Wild Card, into the mix. So, if the Diaz brothers are open to it, don’t be surprised if it happens. Especially since Woodley isn’t currently the champ, and the chances of a fight with Nate Diaz materializing anytime soon are somewhat slim.
Woodley hasn’t fought now since March, when he lost the 170 crown to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235. That defeat snapped Woodley’s seven fight, undefeated streak.
Nate Diaz, meanwhile, is coming off a decision win over Athony Pettis at UFC 241 earlier this month, and afterward, he called for a fight with Jorge Masdvidal. Nick Diaz hasn’t fought now since his 2015 bout with Anderson Silva, and there’s been no real indications lately that an Octagon return is going to happen anytime soon.
