Alexander Volkanovski Sounds as Confident as Ever in Ability to Defeat Max Holloway

Max Holloway may have strengthened the argument he’s the greatest featherweight of all time at UFC 240. But, Alexander Volkanovski still sounds extremely confident in his ability to end “Blessed’s” reign.

Holloway faced the legendary Frankie Edgar on Saturday night, and out struck the former lightweight champ en route to a decision win. Although Holloway was the favorite leading up to the fight, many wondered how Edgar’s wrestling would factor in the bout. Holloway has fought and defeated some notable grapplers in the past. But, one could argue he hadn’t faced anyone with the movement and explosiveness Edgar brings with his wrestling.

Well, as it turns out, Edgar only scored on one of the 15 takedowns he attempted, and Holloway bested him in many of the striking exchanges. So what was Volkanovski’s take on the bout? Considering he’s also someone who’s turned heads with his ground-and-pound assault?

While talking about Holloway’s win, and what he brings to the table, Volkanovski said this (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“There was a lot of things that I thought would happen. I knew Frankie would be able to handle the pace when Max really wanted to pour it on. He always had that instinct to shoot, to slow it down and make Max hesitate. Max really worked his jab really well and still really good on his distance….”

“I’m actually comfortable a little bit out of range as well. I like to pick my times when to come in,” Volkanovski explained. “I’m very comfortable in the pocket as well. He likes to really pour it on and you’ve seen when he’s really in your face, really trying to suffocate you, and give you that claustrophobic feeling but Frankie didn’t really crumble there and I know I won’t and I know I can handle that pace and I know I’m very powerful.

“So if you want to come at me with that sort of game plan, I feel I’m pretty explosive and powerful. I feel I can do a lot more damage and again, I’ve got my wrestling background. Max is a true champion. I enjoy watching him fight but I want to get that fight. I want it.”

Yes, it would be pretty shocking if Volkanovski came out and said he had less confidence in his ability to defeat Holloway now, on account of what happened Saturday. But, to hear the Australian fighter’s take on this is interesting nonetheless. As it stands right now, we should see later this year whether Volkanovski has what it takes to defeat the Hawaiian star.
