UFC 238: Tony Ferguson’s Winning Streak Continues, Doctor Stops Donald Cerrone

Tony Ferguson didn’t finish Donald Cerrone directly, but “El Cucuy” recorded a stoppage win over UFC 238 in his first fight of 2019.

Ferguson came out pressuring and Cerrone looked to counter. Both men scored with jabs, but redness started appearing under Cerrone’s left eye not long in. Cerrone scored with a couple more shots, and Ferguson just missed with an elbow from left field. Both lightweights continued to offer a lot of volume, and a cut opened above the right eye of Ferguson. Shortly before the round ended, Cerrone cracked Ferguson with a big left, but “El Cucuy” returned fire moments later as the crowd roared.

Ferguson stun Cerrone with a jab moments into round two, and the former interim champ continued to press forward. Ferguson grazed Cerrone with a head kick as he began to free flow. Cerrone was starting to wear all the various shots he was taking, and moments later, he momentarily took Ferguson down. Considerable swelling started to form under the right eye of Cerrone, and Ferguson didn’t appear to be tired at all. After the second horn went, Ferguson cracked Cerrone with a right hand that rocked the latter’s head back.

In between rounds, Cerrone must have blown his bloody nose and his right eye completely swelled up shut. As a result, the fight was called by the cage side doctor. There was some debate by the commentating team as to whether the late punch could have caused the damage to the eye, but the replay showed the punch was to Cerrone’s nose. It was an unfortunate way to end the fight, but Ferguson appeared to be en route to victory.
