After Tony Ferguson defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 238, Dana White wasn’t quoted saying that “El Cucuy” will finally, fight for the 155 crown. But, in a recent interview, the UFC President reported that he thinks Ferguson will indeed, face the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov – Dustin Poirier.
Ferguson extended his awe-inspiring winning streak to 12 at the recent event, by recording a TKO victory (via doctor stoppage) over “Cowboy”. Due to the fight’s somewhat controversial final moments – Ferguson landed a shot after round two ended, and Cerrone made the mistake of blowing his nose, which in turn, closed his right eye up, there was some talk about a rematch.
But, there were also plenty of folks who argued that Ferguson was likely en route to victory anyway, and therefore, he should, finally, get a title shot. Even though there’s been speculation that the UFC could try to hand Conor McGregor a title shot first.
Well, White was a guest on the LV Sports Biz show, and when asked about whether McGregor will fight Khabib next, he said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“Khabib is fighting Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi in September,” White said. “Then I don’t know, we’ll see. Tony Ferguson just came off a great win this weekend over ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, and I’m assuming he’s next.”
“We’ll see what happens with Conor— what Conor wants to do Conor is super rich,” White said. “It’s hard to get guys to fight when they’re super rich.”
Now, this doesn’t mean that Ferguson will for sure, face the winner of Nurmagoedov – Poirier. But it’s certainly a strong signal in that respect, and welcome news for people who like their championship matchmaking done with a meritocratic focus.
These comments come not long after White said McGregor’s sitting back, waiting to see how things play out at the top of the division. So, it’s going to be really interesting to see what unfolds with Conor.
