Guess Who’s “Standing up For All The Fighters”? Colby Covington

Colby Covington has verbally trashed many a fighter during his UFC run, but as he continues to feud with the promotion, “Chaos” says he’s doing so, in part, to stand up for his colleagues.

As you surely know, Covington has been blasting Dana White and the UFC for a little while now, since the promotion passed him over to give Kamaru Usman a title shot. The latter has been tapped to fight welterweight champ Tyron Woodley at UFC 235, March 2nd.

As it stands right now, it’s not clear what’s going to be next for Covington. The fighter has said he will not fight for anything less than “undisputed” championship pay, and recently it was reported the UFC was targeting about between Covington and Darren Till. But, then it was announced the latter will fight Jorge Masvidal on March 16th.

Well, recently Covington appeared on BJ Penn.com Radio, and during the segment the brash/controversial fighter said this (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I haven’t heard anything from them and I don’t got anything to say to them,” Covington said. “They know where I stand and they’re not going to get anything out of me ’cause I’m standing my ground, I’m standing up for all the fighters that don’t have a f*cking platform, that can’t stand up against the UFC and have to take everything the UFC gives them. All the sh*t the UFC gives them, f*cks all the fighters on the pay and just expects you to do things on a drop of a dime when they want it. All these fighters are yes-men, I’m not a yes-man. I don’t do things. When the UFC says to jump I don’t say ‘how high?’ I’m not that guy.

“The UFC knows where I stand and I’m standing up for what’s right. People can hate me, they can love me, but you know I’m standing up for what I believe in and what I earned and was promised. In life you can only stand by your word and you gotta have big balls in life and that’s what I got.”

So, if you’ve followed Covington over the last couple of years, this is kind of new twist. Sure, more recently he’s been trashing the UFC and White for getting passed over for a title shot. But here Covington is talking about labor and compensation issues, so it will be interesting to see if any other fighters rally behind him here. Either publicly or behind the scenes.
