Tim Allen Reveals ‘The Santa Clause’ Originally Had a Pro-Second Amendment Twist

The 1994 film The Santa Clause is known for being one of the most beloved holiday classics of all time. The movie is known for being light-hearted in nature, which is why it came as a surprise when the film’s star Tim Allen recently revealed that it originally had a much darker twist.

USA Today reported that the movie begins with Allen’s character of Scott Calvin startling Santa as he is delivering gifts, causing him to fall off his roof. Santa then gives Calvin a card informing him that he’s next in line to be the new Santa, and hilarity ensues from there. During a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, however, Allen revealed that the movie originally had Calvin get rid of Santa in a very different way.

“The original ‘Santa Clause’ is a little darker, written by two comedians, and I actually shot and killed Santa…” Allen explained. “He fell off the roof because I thought he was a burglar. He gives me the card, the whole movie starts. The kid actually starts, ‘You just killed Santa.’ And I said, ‘He shouldn’t have been on the roof when he wasn’t invited.'”

Disney was not having any of this pro-gun message

I have to say that I love the explanation Allen’s character would have given as to why he shot the strange man on his roof! Allen himself is a pro-gun conservative who thought this was a great beginning to a movie as well, but the liberal executives at Disney were not having any of it.

“I’m laughing so hard, but the head of Disney at the time, (Jeffrey) Katzenberg said, ‘Well, we can’t start a movie like that,’ and I said, ‘Why not?’ ” Allen said. “And he said, ‘We can’t start a Disney movie with you murdering Santa.’”

When he puts it that way, I guess I have to agree that murdering Santa might be too dark for a children’s movie! Nevertheless, The Santa Clause remains a holiday classic that families everywhere can enjoy to this day, even without its initial pro-gun message!

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
