The WWE is known to obtain some of its superstars from other sports circuits. While the WWE usually stick with sports such as football and mixed martial arts, rumor has it that the WWE wants to recruit tennis star Serena Williams.

Stephanie McMahon Wants to Sign Williams

According to WhatCultureWWE’s Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon thinks Serena is “awesome.” She would love to have the tennis superstar on her wrestling roster; this was revealed during an interview with The Sun. So, if Stephanie McMahon gets her way, we soon may get another famous sports star as an addition to the roster.

Laying the Groundwork – Look Familiar?

Stephanie is undoubtedly laying the groundwork to recruit Serena Williams into the WWE ranks. A couple of years ago, she laid the same type of groundwork with Ronda Rousey, who made her first appearance at WrestleMania, but was signed a couple of years later.

There is no doubt that Ronda Rousey has impressed in the WWE and that she is a stern fan favorite. This would explain why McMahon is looking at Serena as another recruit for the brand. That being said, tennis is a far stretch from the world of professional wrestling.

Is Recruiting Serena Williams a Good Idea?

I understand why Stephanie is looking to recruit Serena. Let’s face it, Williams is one of the biggest female sports stars in the world and is bound to bring some of her own fans to the WWE. Once again, it opens the possibility of the WWE getting more exposure.

One thing is certain, they do not have an interest in Serena Williams because of her wrestling talent. The world of tennis could not be further away from that of professional wrestling. While both sports demand dedication and an outstanding physique, wrestling is a whole lot more dangerous than tennis.

While recruiting Williams to the WWE could bring some new fans into the fold, one does have to wonder how it will affect the existing WWE fan base. It will also have an impact on the wrestlers who come from NXT and would eventually face the superstar in question on the main roster. It leaves them with little room to grow and to become champions in their own right.

Am I against the WWE recruiting Williams? Not at all, but there has to be a line for the sake of unknown wrestlers who make their way up in the business. You cannot have an entire roster consisting of MMA fighters or former tennis players, some wrestlers do not have that advantage.
