Roseanne interview vice

Six months ago, the reboot of the popular television show “Roseanne” was a big hit for ABC and the program’s creator and namesake could do no wrong. There was certainly no talk of firing her considering the rave reviews.

Then everything went wrong.

When Roseanne Barr sent out a racist tweet in May, her apology wasn’t enough to stop her from getting fired from her own show. Many applauded ABC’s decision to cancel the show and can Roseanne – but many also thought Barr was being treated unfairly and held to a different standard than others in entertainment.

Now that the program is carrying on as “The Conners” without Barr, Vice News visited with her recently to find out what her life is like a half year since her controversy.

And she didn’t hold anything back.

“I don’t keep in touch with anyone on the show. I’ve been removed from the process of my life’s work.” Roseanne told VICE News. ”It’s like the worst thing they could have possibly done to me, was to fire me from my own show and let other people write my life story.”

Barr is joined by Vice News on her porch, where she smokes a cigarette – a habit she said she picked up in recent months – and lets everything out.

“I started smoking…I have struggled with mental health issues and I was struggling at that time as well.”

“My whole life I’ve been under punches.”

Barr also vowed to not let the decision to take her out of her own show affect her future.

“My whole life I’ve been under punches, not just my career,” Barr said. “My life. Yeah, I’ve been under punches forever.”

“Roseanne” co-star John Goodman had some kind words for Barr on Jimmy Kimmel in early October.

“She is missed, definitely,” Goodman said. “After that many years, it’s like a family. Last year was so miraculous and so unreal that when it went away it was almost like a dream. I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll be a big boy and handle this,’ and I just crashed for a couple of weeks.”

About the tweet, Barr still says she’s sorry, regrets doing it, but realizes how she feels about it won’t change anything.

“I was impaired and stupid and mistaken and wrong. And for that I apologized,” she said.

It’s impossible to watch the video and not see that Roseanne Barr is in a slump. It looks as though the life force has been sucked out of her. She was kicked multiple times while she was down and it doesn’t seem that anyone is willing to reach a hand out to pull her up off the ground.

Regardless of what you think of Roseanne Barr, it’s hard not to feel compassion for her in this downtrodden state. Everyone deserves a second chance. Hopefully she gets her’s sooner than later.
