Prospect Watch: Get up to Speed on Chris Fishgold Ahead of Octagon Debut at UFC Moncton

UFC Moncton is going down today, and the card will feature the Octagon debut of one of Europe’s top prospects, former Cage Warriors champ, Chris Fishgold.

The Liverpool fighter makes his way to the UFC armed with an impressive record of 17-1-1. That record includes winning Cage Warriors 155 title, but today at UFC Moncton, Fishgold will battle featherweight, Calvin Kattar.

Fishgold is currently riding an eight fight, undefeated streak, and his only defeat went down in 2015, when he lost via decision to Gi Bum Moon. The rising fighter has been described as wrestling and grappling centric, but, if you’re wondering if he finishes fights, the answer is a resounding yes. 14 of Fishgold’s 17 victories have come via submission or TKO. That’s a pretty notable, finishing rate. According to his profile page at the UFC site, Fishgold is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Chris Brennan.

Recently UFC.com ran an interview with Fishgold, and here is some of what he had to say about Kattar, and today’s scrap:

“I can tell I definitely want it and the motivation’s there. With Kattar, there’s a lot of footage on him, and if you want to get motivated, just watch him knock Shane (Burgos) out and you get your ass to training….”

“Me and Kattar are coming for that. I’ve never seen his ground and he hasn’t really seen my standup, but either way, I know we’re both going out there to take each other’s head off. I know I’m very comfortable because I know what I’m bringing to the table and I know my gameplan. The thing is, I can be many things. I fought most of my career against strikers; he hasn’t fought many grapplers.”

“I’ll go out and put my heart on my sleeve and you’re looking at a fast finish. You’re looking at someone going a hundred miles an hour and you don’t know what’s gonna happen. I’m not sure if I’m gonna strike with him or take him down, but either way, in the UFC, you get paid to perform. There’s no other way around it. You get paid to go out there and fight.”

So, it will be interesting to see how Fishgold does against Kattar, who is coming off a loss to Renato Carneiro. Prior to that, however, Kattar had won 10 in a row, and there’s certainly no shame in losing to Carneiro, the promotion’s #4 ranked featherweight.

Fishgold – Katter will be part of today’s preliminary card, which will be broadcast on FS2. In the main event for UFC Moncton, Anthony Smith will throw hands with fellow, light-heavyweight contender, Volkan Oezdemir.
