Colin Kaepernick 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garappolo’s season-ending injury over the weekend has led to chatter about Colin Kaepernick returning to his former NFL gig.

Kaepernick has been a quarterback without a team for a while, giving him the opportunity to be a full-time Black Lives Matter political activist. He opted out of his contract with the 49ers and was unable to land another team.

The embattled former quarterback has been viewed as untouchable by many teams as his protests during the National Anthem have alienated fans. Kaepernick’s loss in 20 of his final 24 starts also didn’t help his case for being signed by a new team last season. But, he might have found hope to return after Garappolo’s possible ACL tear.

There were a number of fans commenting on Twitter that Kaepernick should be called back to his old team. Marcus Cromartie, a free agent cornerback, joined in on the cries for Colin’s return.

NFL viewership is predicted to continue dropping. Many fans have been very vocal about their displeasure of the political activism being lodged during games. These fans turn to football for a break from the hassle of life. They come for the entertainment and they do not want to be lectured or forced to watch protests during the National Anthem. Can you blame people for not wanting the hard earned money they spent on tickets to be handed over to these athletes using their platform as a way to bash police officers? Kaepernick’s return would further alienate these fans.

Kaepernick rolled the dice by opting out of his contract. That was ultimately his decision and he overplayed his hand. It is hard to accept his cries of the injustice of not being signed by a team. He is owed nothing. He had the option of staying with the 49ers and he chose not to. Any return of his might inflame an already tender wound.
