good parenting

These days, there are plenty of parents who are more concerned with being their children’s friend rather than being their parent. A Michigan mom who was trying to do the right thing by taking her teen daughter’s iPhone away as a form of discipline ended up in jail when local authorities appeared to disagree with her parenting.

Parenting is hard. You only have so many years to get your kids on the right path before they become adults. If you don’t raise them to be respectful when they are young, they are likely going to turn into entitled and sometimes reckless adults. Jodie May doesn’t want that to happen to her daughter so she took away her iPhone when she broke a rule.

How was she awarded for acting like a proper parent? By having the police show up at her home to arrest her. The day prior to Mother’s Day, the mom was charged with stealing her daughter’s iPhone. To make this even more disturbing, she was nursing her 4-week-old daughter when police arrived. She says she told them it was taken as a punishment and asked if she could turn herself in on Monday given that she had to care for a newborn.

“He had told me that he was going to arrest me, and I asked him if I could turn myself in on that Monday by myself, that I had a new baby. She wasn’t taking the bottle yet,” the old school mom said.

That request was refused and she was hauled off to jail on Mother’s Day weekend. Her crime was punishing her daughter by taking away her iPhone. She was kept in a holding cell for two hours before she made bail. This is how the Ottawa Prosecutor celebrates Mother’s Day – by locking up a mom for trying to teach her teen a lesson.

Only this week were charges against May finally dropped. It took that long for the Ottawa County Prosecutor to get some common sense and understand this is proper discipline for a teenager.

The charges were filed by May’s ex-husband who claimed that he bought the phone, therefore May had stolen it. This ridiculous excuse for a charge against another parent was made even weaker by the fact that the ex-husband had given the phone to their daughter as a Christmas gift, so he actually didn’t own the phone anymore. But, the prosecutor didn’t care about this fact until recently when charges were dropped a few minutes into May’s trial this week.

There are plenty of bad parents out there who don’t care about their kids. It’s alarming that this mom was locked up and had to go to court because she did the right thing by disciplining her daughter!
