Leftist activists attempt to make everything political. They can’t let us just enjoy something without inserting their talking points and promoting their agenda. However, after setting their sights on beloved characters from Sesame Street, they just got served some reality from the longstanding program.

Liberals have long tried to claim that Bert and Ernie are a gay couple. They live together, but they have separate beds. There has been no romantic interaction between the puppets on the show, but that hasn’t stopped activists from pushing this narrative. Sesame Street characters have taught many children educational basics for years, like how to count and get along with others. But these activists also want them to push a social platform, too.

Recently, “Sesame Street” writer Mark Saltzman stated that he based the characters off him and his gay partner Arnie.

“I always felt that, without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [a couple]. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them,” Saltzman said. “The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as ‘Bert & Ernie.'”

Liberal activists clung to these comments out of their need for everything to be sexualized, including a show for preschoolers. They had been hoping for this moment to politicize the television show for generations and jumped at the opportunity on Twitter. One such example is below.

Suddenly, Sesame Workshop issued a statement completely negating this rumor. As it turns out, Bert and Ernie are best friends with very different personalities, as they have always been portrayed on the show. They are puppets, therefore they don’t have a sexual orientation! This was clarified in a tweet that quickly went viral.

It’s sad that some feel the need to sexualize a show that has been influential to so many children. But, that is the reality of today. While Bert and Ernie taught many kids how to get along with people who are different from them, that wasn’t enough of a lesson.

Frank Oz helped create Bert’s character. He insists that the puppet is not gay and thinks this entire debate is ludicrous. He also pointed out that we should not define people (or puppets) by their sexuality.

Many of us viewed them as a puppet variation of “The Odd Couple.” Felix was straight and serious like Bert, while Oscar and Ernie were the opposite. Much like Felix and Oscar, Bert and Ernie were roommates with very different personalities.

As the final scene from “The Odd Couple” demonstrates, there are many similarities between Bert and Ernie and Felix and Oscar. Most importantly, they are just two friends sharing a space together.
