Brock Lesnar was set to beat CM Punk’s record as the longest reigning champion of the modern era, and now it has officially happened. With only a few title defenses since he gained the championship, Lesnar had an easy route to breaking the record. Of course, considering Lesnar’s reign, there is loads of controversy surrounding the record-breaker. Here is the story.

Becoming Champion at April 2, 2017

Lesnar became the fourth WWE Universal Champion on April 2, 2017. He would obtain the title after beating Goldberg at WrestleMania 33. There were three champions before him: Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, and Goldberg.

Fans believed Lesnar would drop the title at WrestleMania 34. The WWE surprised everyone by continuing the underwhelming reign of the current champion. Since winning his title in 2017, Lesnar had an absolute minimum of title defenses, which does not sit well with most WWE fans.

Different Rules

One of the things that has upset many fans during Brock’s title reign is that different rules apply to him. When Finn Balor won the WWE Universal Championship, he had to relinquish the title due to an injury, leaving him unable to defend the title within the mandatory 31-day time frame. However, Lesnar’s title defenses have been far from every 31 days, leaving many fans wondering why he has such privileges compared to other upcoming wrestlers.

Overpaid with Even Less Appearances

Brock Lesnar is being paid an astronomical amount of money for even appearing on WWE television; he does not also have to wrestle. With the WWE cutting back on things left and right, including pyro, it has left many people wondering why the WWE is willing to pay Lesnar astronomical amounts, despite having an exciting wrestling roster behind the scenes.

It’s Not Even About CM Punk

My disappointment is not even about CM Punk and him losing his longest reign in the modern era. It’s about what Lesnar’s lengthy title reign represents. It sends a signal that as long as you’re a big man with veteran status, you do not have to put on long matches. What message does that send to the hard working wrestlers backstage? What signal does that send to the many wrestlers who hope to obtain the title in the future?

Aside from the clear issues, it is also a matter of respect for the wrestling business. While Lesnar certainly has an interesting track record in wrestling, he always has one foot out of the door, thinking of returning to MMA. I am not saying Lesnar is not an athlete or that he does not deserve success. I am saying that Lesnar is not in the right spot at the moment. It feels like he has a stranglehold on the title. All while being more interested in a possible MMA fight in the future. I am disappointed that this is the champion to set a record going down in wrestling history.

What do you think about Lesnar’s new record?
