Chiropractor Warns: Don’t Sleep On Your Right Side!

It’s well known that failing to get enough sleep can be detrimental to both your physical and mental health. But did you know the position in which you sleep could be the cause of your back, shoulder, and stomach pain?

According to sleep expert and chiropractor Dr. John Douillard, sleeping on your right side is not good for your body. Furthermore, he says there are significant health benefits to be gained from sleeping on your left side. Find them below.

Digestion

There are many causes for digestion issues, but experts say that sleeping on your left side can make the process a little easier. This is because the stomach and pancreas are located on the left side of the body, and sleeping on the left side actually helps them to function properly.

When you go to bed, the undigested toxins move from your small intestine to the large one, and then finally make their way to the colon. Once they’re in the colon, they are excreted in the morning. This is why you should sleep on your left side; it helps this process run more smoothly. In fact, experts also suggest that after a big meal, people take a quick power nap on their left side. It will help digest the meal and give you more energy.

Heart Health

Like the stomach and pancreas, your heart is also located on the left side of the body, and sleeping on your left side promotes better blood flow towards the heart. Your heart shouldn’t have to work harder when you’re asleep, so consider rolling over onto your left side!

Pregnancy Health

It’s already advised that pregnant women sleep on their side instead of their back, so why not take an extra step and be sure to sleep on the left side? Doing so helps with blood flow to the uterus and fetus, as well as nutrient flow to the placenta (remember: the stomach is on the left side!). Indeed, the best sleeping position for pregnant women is on the left side, knees bent with a pillow in-between.

Snoring

Does your partner sound like a chainsaw when they’re sleeping? Tell them to sleep on their left side! Sleeping on your back makes snoring worse, as it pushes your muscles to the back of the throat. Sleeping on your side, on the other hand, keeps the tongue and throat in a neutral position. So why not sleep on your left side and stop snoring while also reaping all the other health benefits?

Adequate sleep is key to good health and armed with these tips, your sleep will be that much more healthful.
