James Grice Jaron Johnson

Seniors who live on a fixed income, typically don’t have money to spare. So, when 86-year-old James Grice lost a $100 bill while shopping at Walmart, he was not able to buy groceries. He thought the money would be gone forever, but his luck changed when an 8-year-old  boy who was raised to do the right thing spotted the high dollar bill.

Jodie Johnson describes her son Jaron as a thoughtful and helpful boy. Jaron often goes above and beyond to help and that’s exactly what he did at Walmart. He told his mom as soon as he found the $100 bill and they reported it to the store. Many kids would have thought of the things they could buy with $100, but not Jaron.

The elderly man thought he didn’t have much of a chance of getting his money back. “When I walked outside of the store I said lord let somebody that really needs that money, find it,” he said. “When I turn things over to the Lord, I don’t fool with it anymore.”

Jaron was hopeful that the person who dropped the money would ask Walmart if anyone had found it. “I gave it to my mom and then the next day when we woke up I reminded her to call Walmart to see if anyone reported it,” the Louisiana 8-year-old boy said. Much to his delight, they had.

Later, the Johnsons met up with Grice. The elderly man was so grateful that this young boy helped him out by returning the money that he gave Jaron a reward. Grice gave the child a $20 bill and some tomatoes, which are Jaron’s favorite. “That child right there, he’s 100 percent to me,” said Grice.

Jodie Johnson was immensely proud of her son, who always looks to do the right thing. “We talked about it on the way home, you know, people work hard for their money,” she said. “I was immediately proud of him. He’s a great kid, he has amazing character. He does the right thing even when no one is looking.”

In a world with so much negativity, this story is quite welcome. There are people looking to help out and do the right thing. Instilling these values in young children is essential. This situation is proof of that!

Share this if you think Jaron did the right thing!
