chip gaines reveals tweet ended fixer upper

Fans of Chip and Joanna Gaines were devastated when the husband-and-wife team announced in September that their hit HGTV show “Fixer Upper” would come to an end after its fifth season. And now that “Fixer Upper” is officially no more, Chip has revealed exactly why he and Jo decided to end it.

In his new book, “Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff,” Chip reveals that a tweet he received from a customer at 2 a.m. was the catalyst that “changed everything.”

The tweet read, “Hey @chippergaines, it’s been 3 weeks, and I still haven’t gotten my wreath. What’s up?!”

Gaines writes in his book, “I tried to shake it off, knowing that I couldn’t do anything about it then and that it would have to wait until morning. No luck. I was up all night dwelling on it.”

The next day, Chip writes, he was on set with his wife filming “Fixer Upper,” but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t shake the thought: “What am I doing here?”

After that, Chip realized that the show had become nothing more than a “job” that was robbing him of time for “my true loves, my family and my business.”

“Something shifted within me. Suddenly filming the TV show looked like ‘the job’ that had seduced me into giving it my precious time that I had always promised would be reserved for my true loves, my family and my business. How had this side gig found its way to competing with the very things that mean more to me than anything else in the world?”

With that newfound realization, Chip and Joanna made the difficult decision to end “Fixer Upper” in order to focus their time and energy on their longtime business, Magnolia Market.

Gaines adds, “It was really easy for us to feel like we could do it all when the show and the business were in the early stages. But the bigger things got — and they got big fast— the less energy we had to devote to all three. So much time was being allocated to filming that the details of the business were slipping.”

While making the decision to end their hit show was certainly no easy task, it seems that Chip and Joanna are better off for it. Magnolia is booming: at the end of March, Joanna announced the opening of a brand new restaurant, Magnolia Table.

Fans will certainly miss “Fixer Upper,” but Chip and Joanna aren’t going anywhere. Kudos to them for making the decision based on what was best for their family and their passion.
