Neil Diamond Announces Devastating Diagnosis, Immediate Retirement

Neil Diamond has been entertaining us for decades. His live shows consistently sell out as his popularity remains high. But, those live shows will no longer be happening. A devastating Parkinson’s diagnosis has led Neil to announce his retirement from live touring.

This decision will be effective immediately. The third leg of his 50th Anniversary tour is canceled. This includes shows in New Zealand and Australia and refunds will be issued.

“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” Diamond said on his website.”My sincerest apologies to everyone who purchased tickets and were planning to come to the upcoming shows.”

This announcement and diagnosis came just prior to Diamond’s 77th birthday on January 24th. The performer is known for putting on spectacular shows. He didn’t feel he was able to continue delivering at the same level while struggling with Parkinson’s.

Neil Diamond’s music won’t soon be fading away. We can obviously still listen to his songs, but he will also be creating new music. He just won’t be touring as the physical demands with concerts are too straining.

“I plan to remain active in writing, recording and other projects for a long time to come,” he announced on his website. “My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement. This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you.”

Neil Diamond’s distinctive voice has drawn in millions of fans. His popularity remained consistently high even as he aged. He has dozens of songs that generations of fans sing along to.

“Song Sung Blue” is a rather appropriate song to listen and sing to because of this announcement. A video of Neil Diamond singing this song in 1976 is below. As you can see, Neil engaged the fans in his concerts by getting them to sing too. Henry Winkler even came out of the audience to sing with him!

Parkinson’s is a debilitating disease. There is no cure. Neil Diamond and his family certainly could use our prayers as they begin this awful medical journey.
