google being sued

Last year, tech giant Google made headlines after they fired a man named James Damore for criticizing the company’s diversity policy. Damore penned a 3,000-word memo and Google fired him for “perpetuating gender stereotypes” about men and women.

At the time, Damore stressed that he valued diversity but said the matter required “honest discussion” because “the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership.”

Well, several months after his dismissal from Google, Damore is fighting back, claiming in a lawsuit that the company discriminates against white conservative men. The suit was filed Monday in Santa Clara Superior Court, and Damore is joined by another former Google engineer, David Gudeman.

The lawsuit claims that “Damore, Gudeman, and other class members were ostracized, belittled, and punished for their heterodox political views, and for the added sin of their birth circumstances of being Caucasians and/or males. This is the essence of discrimination—Google formed opinions about and then treated Plaintiffs not based on their individual merits, but rather on their membership in groups with assumed characteristics.”

In a recent interview, Damore said that Google still engages in “harassment and career sabotage of anyone that expresses a conservative viewpoint, and there’s constant shaming and attacks against white men within Silicon Valley.”

The lawsuit also maintains that “Google employees and managers strongly preferred to hear the same orthodox opinions regurgitated repeatedly, producing an ideological echo chamber, a protected, distorted bubble of groupthink.”

Google doesn’t seem to be afraid of this lawsuit saying they “look forward to defending against Mr. Damore’s lawsuit in court.”

Damore likely has an uphill battle in court, because being a conservative is not a protected class against discrimination, and his claim that Google discriminates against white men will be hard to prove. Google’s most recent data shows that 69% of its workforce is male and in the U.S. 56% of its employees are white.

No one should be fired from their job for expressing their political views, and if it can be proven that Google systematically discriminates against white men, then they should be held accountable.
