Spiders aren’t creatures most of us want to be around. When people see them, they typically smash them under their shoe or run away in a panic. Now, newly released research reveals information that will give nightmares to arachnophobes and most folks in general.

This alarming study discovered there are enough spiders on the earth to wipe out humanity in just one year. If the spiders worked together, they could devour every living human in a relatively short amount of time.

Experts Martin Nyffeler of the University of Basel in Switzerland and Klaus Birkhofer of Lund University in Sweden, detailed this horrifying information in the Science of Nature journal. This information is likely to boost exterminator and fly swatter sales as people come to terms with the results.

These researchers learned that the world’s spiders consumed between 400 and 800 million tons of prey annually. This means the eight-legged arachnids eat more meat than all seven billion humans do. People apparently only eat 400 million tons of meat and fish each year. The world’s frighteningly creepy creatures known as spiders exceed us in that regard.

The scientists aren’t saying that the spiders will begin attacking us. They are saying that it would be possible if they worked together. Thankfully, it’s not in spiders’ nature to do so. We need to make sure the unions don’t try to organize these creepy arachnids.

This might have you wondering why did they spend money on this research. If it’s not in spiders’ nature to do this, why bother going to all the trouble? Perhaps the goal was to scare the crap out of us or to propel extermination sales. Whatever the reason, I will probably squash spiders a little harder now that I am armed with this useless yet terrifying information.
