Hurricane Irma

Less than two weeks after Hurricane Harvey caused major destruction across Texas, the Southern United States is bracing for yet another major hurricane.

Hurricane Irma, which was just upgraded to an “extremely dangerous” Category 5 storm, is barreling towards the Southeast, causing Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to issue states of emergency.

The National Hurricane Center is reporting that Irma has sustained winds around 175 miles an hour, and as of Tuesday morning, was 270 miles east of Antigua, traveling at 14 mph.

The storm is expected to hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday, before moving on towards the United States mainland.

To prepare for the pending destruction, Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency to make sure that “local governments have ample time, resources and flexibility to get prepared for this dangerous storm.”

The governor stressed that Florida “cannot afford to not be prepared” and his state is going to great lengths to ensure that its citizens are prepared before Irma makes landfall.

While Irma is a very powerful storm, it is not expected to dump as much rain or cause as much damage as Harvey, which dumped approximately 50 inches of rain on the Houston area.

If you have friends or family that live in Florida, especially the Southern portion of the state, please make sure they have all the necessary supplies needed if they plan on riding out this storm.
