math problem

Math problems sometimes cause a lot of buzz on social media. Math isn’t a subject that is subjective, but the way problems are written out can cause debate as some of us learned math in a different way than others.

9 – 3 ÷ 1/3 + 1 = ?

The above math problem is quite a tricky one. It went viral in Japan after a study pointed out that only 60 percent of people in their 20s in that country could solve it.

It seems pretty straight forward, but some of us got tripped up on the order of operations. Not even a calculator can help you solve this problem, but you can check out the solution in the video below.

As the video details, the correct answer is 1. If your answer was three, seven or nine, you have lots of company! I thought it was three and I am rather proficient at math.
