Joel Osteen Fires Back After Critics Attack Him For Hurricane Response

Joel Osteen has been the subject of vicious attacks on social media. Comments about Hurricane Harvey victims being locked out of the pastor’s massive Lakewood Church portrayed him as an anti-Christian hypocrite.

But, Osteen claims that is not the truth. Lakewood Church itself had flooding issues. Like everyone, the church wasn’t expecting so much flooding and so many displaced people. On NBC’s “Today” show, Osteen said they had to ensure the church had resolved “safety issues” before bringing in large numbers of people.

A quick look at Lakewood Church’s Facebook page shows the announcement that the church was flooded on Sunday. It was not in a position to accept displaced people when it was taking on water.

Osteen continues to take a beating on social media. The “Today” interview is fueling that a bit since Osteen stated that he wasn’t asked to be a shelter by the City of Houston. Some social media warriors believe he should have stepped up and done that without being asked.

Since Osteen took a couple of days to respond to the social media attacks, he is likely going to have to do some serious damage control. Even if his intentions were good, a two-day delay in a crisis such as Hurricane Harvey will be costly.
