John Bernecker

Walking Dead stuntman John Bernecker died on the set of the AMC show after falling from a 25 foot high balcony onto a concrete floor on Wednesday afternoon. The accident happened at Raleigh Studio in Georgia.

Bernecker was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save him after placing him on a ventilator. The 33-year-old died in the hospital Thursday evening surrounded by his friends and family and his girlfriend, who is a stuntwoman on the show as well.

An assistant director on set called 911 and reported that a medic requested “a flight en route now.” He also told them “his neck is in the position where he landed.” He was bleeding from his nose and was barely conscious and unable to talk to anyone. The assistant director noted his breathing was labored.

It appears he died from a serious head injury that involved swelling in his brain.

Bernecker worked 10 years as a stuntman. He provided stunt work for some massive blockbuster movies including Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Panther and this year’s hit successes Logan and The Fate of the Furious.

AMC suspended production of The Walking Dead following Bernecker’s horrific accident.

He will definitely be missed. Our prayers are with his family and friends.
