USDA bans beef

The USDA has banned fresh beef from Brazil amid recurring safety concerns over the imported meat.

Since March of this year, the USDA has been testing 100% of all Brazilian meat. 11% of the imported fresh beef has been turned away before even hitting American grocery shelves.

Other meat importers, such as China, have cut back on Brazilian imports because an investigation of meat companies bribing government officials to turn a blind eye on inspections.

US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said, “international trade is an important part of what we do at USDA, and Brazil has long been one of our partners, my first priority is to protect American consumers.”

The ban will continue until the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture corrects the problem to the USDA’s satisfaction. This may increase prices until the demand is supplied from other sources.
