brother kidnaps sister

We all know how important family can be, and their opinions can have a lasting impact on the decisions we make in life.

Marriage is one of the biggest decisions one can make, and how your family views your prospective spouse can make or break whether or not the relationship will last.

Well, one man went to extreme lengths to stop his sister from getting married, and now he’s facing serious jail time.

Conrad Eugene Kaufman of Missouri is facing first-degree kidnapping charges after he kidnapped his sister, Cindy, just one week before her wedding day to fiance John Graber.

While this kidnapping story itself is very strange, the story gets even more complicated, according to Cindy’s fiance.

Graber and his fiance were raised Amish and left their community approximately one year ago to join a Mennonite community. As a result, they were “shunned.”

According to News Express Now:

Graber said he believes his soon-to-be in-laws were led to believe their daughter was not in a good situation. He said Conrad Kaufman and other family members may have been encouraged to act by others.

“As a whole, as far as this entire tragedy, the community as a whole bears a responsibility in this,” Graber said. “They honestly believed, in their heart, they were rescuing her … against her will.”

Conrad Kaufman previously pleaded guilty in 2013 to charges of driving while intoxicated, drug possession, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, failure to register a vehicle/trailer and operating a vehicle without a valid license.

For whatever reason, Cindy’s Amish family and community thought their daughter was in danger, and her brother went to extreme lengths to keep her safe.

It is unknown why the Amish community felt that their daughter was in danger, but perhaps this was merely an attempt to return her to the community that she fled.

Regardless of the reason, Cindy’s brother’s decision to kidnap her was extreme and dangerous. Clearly, Cindy was not in danger, as she has been happily reunited with her fiance in time for her wedding.
