You should never fully trust the Internet. Walkers has now learned that lesson the hard way, because the company used a photo of Chris Benoit during a campaign. Curious what happened? Read the story below to find out!

Walkers Twitter Campaign

Walkers – the famous crisp brand (That’s chips for you Americans) – planned a Twitter marketing campaign, where people could Tweet selfies and they would be featured in the advertising campaign. Unfortunately, things went horribly wrong, as people started to send pictures of notorious killers.

One of the people featured in the ad was Chris Benoit. Now, if you are a wrestling fan, you already know the story of Chris Benoit and how he murdered his wife and son. Benoit would later kill himself, only to be discovered days afterward. Walkers, I think you just made the list.

Criminals Featured

The incident got much bigger though, because Chris Benoit was not the only killer or criminal featured in the ad campaign. Here are some of the other notorious killers that appeared in the Twitter ad campaign.

Joseph Fritzl

Austrian rapist Josef Fritzl was imprisoned for life in 2009. He was convicted for the rape and imprisonment of his own daughter, who he had seven children with over the course of 24 years.

Harold Shipman a.k.a. the Killer Doctor

Harold Shipman is one of the UK’s most prolific serial killers. The former doctor was sentenced and convicted of 15 murders in 2000. However, his actual victim count is estimated at 250 people, of which 80% were women.

Peter Sutcliffe (Coonan) a.k.a. the Yorkshire Ripper

Peter Sutcliffe, better known by the name the Yorkshire Ripper, was convicted of 13 murders and seven attempted murders in 1981, making him one of the most notorious serial killers in the 80’s. Unfortunately, this monster also appeared in the Walkers campaign.

Fred West

One of the world’s most notorious serial killers was also featured in the ad, more specifically Fred West, responsible for the Gloucestershire “House of Horrors”.

Fred West and his wife Rosemary are responsible for 12 murders between 1967 and 1987. All victims of the murderous couple were young women, who were raped, tortured, mutilated, killed, and dismembered by the couple.

The victims of these monsters were buried in the cellar and garden of their house in Cromwell Street; this included Fred’s stepdaughter Charmaine.

Jimmy Savile

The last featured criminal that caused quite an uproar was notorious English pedophile Jimmy Savile. He was a famous English television and radio personality, who was outed as a notorious pedophile after his death.

Allegations of sexual abuse of children date back to 1963. According to the Metropolitan Police Service, they launched a formal investigation into Jimmy Savile after his death, pursuing more than 400 lines of inquiry. Unfortunately, Savile would never be punished for his crimes.

My Opinion

When I heard about this Walkers ad at first, I must admit I laughed. But once I saw the enormity of all the killers featured in the ad, you have to wonder what people were thinking and how Walkers could let this happen?
