The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city in South Carolina and became popular in 1923 when pianist James P. Johnson’s Broadway show, Runnin’ Wild, saw Elisabeth Welch sing “Charleston.” However, the dance originally debuted in Irving C. Miller’s Liza.
The dance has been seen in a number of films throughout the 1920s and even in some contemporary films. Its most recent appearance was in 2013’s The Great Gatsby.
