The 2016 Country Music Awards kicked off with an amazing mashup of classic country songs. It morphed the best of country with today’s singers, like Carrie Underwood singing Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man”, and some living country legends, including Charlie Daniels, Roy Clarke, and Charley Pride.

This opening act was completely free of any bro-country. It’s was old school country.

The opening song featured Ben Haggard, Merle’s youngest son who teamed up with Vince Gill for  “Mama Tried”

The highlight had to be Randy Travis. Travis who suffered a massive stroke, joined in for his “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

If you are a country fan, you simply must watch the video below!

That was worth watching! What a star studded performance and a pure treat for country fans!

This was one of my favorite Country Music Awards in a longtime because it primarily got back to its roots despite a random performance by Beyonce with the Dixie Chicks.

Share this if you thought this was a terrific way to begin the CMAs!
