Carmella had a bit of shaky start to her main roster debut after the brand extension. Split from Enzo & Cass, breaking out on her own, for one reason or another her face gimmick wasn’t connecting with the SmackDown LIVE fans. She turned heel, jumped in a feud with Nikki Bella, and has been slowly gaining some momentum.

And the feud with Bella has been good. Gaining some wins from her, viciously attacking her from behind, showing off some aggression; the NXTer is certainly trying to make a name for herself. But, it has felt that something was missing, and I struggled with being impressed by Carmella … until this past Tuesday night.

The interesting thing is, I was skeptical about what Carmella was going to say, as SD LIVE was hyping up her promo during the show.  When Nikki came down to the ring, I was worried it would be the ‘same old, same old’ from these two.

But I was wrong.

It didn’t take long for Carmella to drop the ‘J’ word, basically saying Nikki’s success in the WWE has been handed to her, thanks to her boyfriend John Cena, and that Bella was a gold-digger.

In all seriousness folks, whether you agree with Carmella or not, it was nice to finally acknowledge the elephant in the room within WWE storylines. Paige had once implied it in a pipebomb promo before, but Carmella bringing up their relationship is a huge move for the heel character. Moreover, dropping Cena’s name in the picture not only provides a different angle on the feud, but it also intensifies it. Great time to do it, when John Cena is on hiatus, where the focus will remain primarily on the two ladies. And, all in one nice little bundle, TOTAL Bellas is also being promoted on SmackDown LIVE; as Carmella made sure to ‘edit’ a video that made Bella look like a needy ‘gold-digger’. Such a far stretch from the way Total Divas use to be hyped on WWE programing; where they would schlep together a divas match with all the cast members. It would be a confusing state where faces would turn heel – and heels would turn face.

And hats off to the both ladies. Carmella impressed me tremendously with her mic work on Tuesday night. It’s probably the first time I’ve really taken notice to her. As for Bella, she was quite strong as well and has come such a long way with her mic skills. I’ve always said things can change dramatically after one promo, and this one was a fine example. Carmella further adds heat to herself by attacking the face, Nikki solidifies her face status, the program heats up further, and the WWE promotes their reality show on E! Really, a win-win situation for all.
