Washington. Grant. Pershing. Eisenhower. MacArthur. Patton — are Generals whose names have become legendary for their leadership in major wars. People just know their names. They may not know all details of what they have done but people know who they are.
General Douglas MacArthur just prior to retiring after a decorated 52 years of service, delivered a stirring speech before Congress where he spoke of the threat of North Korea and China. The full text of the speech can be found here. The key part is at the end when he said:
The world has turned over many times since I took the oath on the plain at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barracks ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that old soldiers never die; they just fade away.
And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Good-bye.
That phrase, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away” has been turned into a song and this video shows soldiers singing that song to a World War 2 veteran who served under George S. Patton. Take a look:
