Howard Hayes

The Greatest Generation is unlike any other. They saved the world by putting our country before themselves and their work ethic can’t be duplicated.

And now that so many of them are gone, it’s important to appreciate and learn from those who are still with us. That’s what Honor Flight Nevada did when they sent 96 year old Howard Hayes to Baltimore to see U.S. Coast Guard cutter Taney. Hayes is the last surviving member of that ship’s crew from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Hayes was just 21 years old at the time of the attack. It’s a day he will never forget. “When the Japanese planes came over us and the power plant they didn’t know we were there,” Hayes said. “I gave the range and how high they were and surprised the Japanese so much they didn’t have a chance to do anything.”

Watch his reunion with his beloved ship:

Shirley Wetmore is Hayes’ daughter. She said visiting the ship was #1 on her dad’s bucket list. As happy as he was to be there, the staff of the ship was even more honored to have him there. They view Hayes as a vital part of the ship’s history.

We can never do enough to repay these men who sacrificed so much. It’s so heartwarming to see Howard Hayes fulfill this wish.

Please share this to remind others of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation!
