If you like to cook, chances are you have a cast iron skillet. They are very reliable because of their even heat distribution. And if they are properly cared for, they can seemingly last forever. Many of us have skillets used by our grandmothers. They are so tough they can last generations if properly cared for. A key to this durability is to season it.

With minimal effort, you can have your beloved skillet for an entire lifetime.

Here’s what you will need to season your skillet:

Cast iron skillet
Dish soap (minimal)
Kosher salt
Sponge or stiff brush
Clean, dry cloth or paper towels
Vegetable oil or shortening (or other oil of your choice)

Here’s what you need to do:

Preheat oven to 325°F.

Wash your skillet with warm, mildly soapy water (it’s okay to use a little soap while seasoning) using a sponge or stiff brush. Use the Kosher salt to scrub off stubborn bits of food.

Rinse and completely dry the skillet.

Taking a cloth or paper towel, apply a thin coat of vegetable oil or melted shortening to the inside and outside of the skillet.

Place the skillet upside down on the oven’s center rack.

Place a sheet of aluminum foil below the rack to catch any drips.

Bake your skillet for an hour.

When done, allow it to cool completely before removing it from the oven. Without much effort, your cast iron skillet can be in your kitchen arsenal your entire lifetime! It might even become a sort of family heirloom with the next generation cooking with it too!

If you have a rusty skillet, don’t toss it. That can easily be remedied and given new life. You can get instructions in the video below and be back to using it rather quickly.
