Triple H Is A Better Booker Than Wrestler

Triple H is one of the most controversial figures in the history of professional wrestling and will likely remain so for the remainder of his employment with the WWE. If you’ve been a professional wrestling fan for any portion of the past decade and a half then you have an opinion on Triple H – some like him, some hate him. As a professional wrestler, his talent cannot be questioned as he has been able to have quality matches with nearly anyone and everyone that’s been on the roster in the past twenty plus years. However many have accused him of burying talent in the same way that other members of the Kliq have been criticized in the past.

It’s clear that his full-time professional wrestling days are thankfully over and done with. Triple H has now reverted to an authority-based role – one which he will likely maintain for the remainder of his days as a television presence. While this still puts him in a position where he could be accused of burying other wrestlers on the mic, many are still focused on his television character more than they are in the work he has done behind the scenes with the formation of NXT, the development of new talents and his creative contributions to the product.

As a leader, Triple H has received praise for his efforts. The future of the WWE looks bright with him at the helm. Though Vince McMahon will be the first one to say that he doesn’t run a wrestling company and instead runs live events and/or entertainment-based promotions company, Triple H has been a part of the WWE in some capacity since 1995. He has seen the company move through multiple eras – the New Generation, the early Attitude Era, the Attitude Era, the Ruthless Aggression Era, the rise of John Cena, the rise of CM Punk, etc. Throughout this time, Triple H has acquired the necessary knowledge to be able to give him a level of expertise that perhaps no one else has at the company other than Vince McMahon himself.

While he certainly has a lot of proving that he will need to do in the coming years, Triple H has already established himself as someone who can successfully run a wrestling promotion in the form of NXT. The NXT pay per views have been critically acclaimed, the creative output of the company has been praised and employee morale is higher than perhaps it’s ever been. If Triple H can take this approach and scale it to the entire WWE then, in all likelihood, we could see a better company come out of this than what we are working with presently.

In terms of character development, there have been various reports that have surfaced online suggesting Triple H’s involvement in the introduction of all NXT talents to the main roster as well as working directly with specific talents such as Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan and Bo Dallas. While we’re unsure of how much time he has spent specifically on the development of these characters, it’s clear that the talents Triple H has brought up from his NXT have all succeeded without fail. It’s hard to argue with that track record.

One may conclude that Triple H could very well end up running the company better than he ever did wrestle.

My personal perspective is that, as an on-air talent, Triple H has been on television for the better part of the past twenty years. Many people are tired of seeing him in the same way that they’re tired of seeing Cena. Eventually pulling the Triple H character completely from television may be the best way to preserve his value as a performer. In the past six months, he hasn’t been particularly impressive as a performer. We’ve seen him flub lines, display a lack of control in the delivery of his in-ring promos and he hasn’t contributed anything new to the product as an in-ring character. We’ve had twenty years of Triple H on TV. Give us twenty years of Triple H running the company. Then let’s see where he’s the best fit.
