Shatner Talks About Aging

When told by The Guardian, last year that he looked good for a 90 year old, Shatner replied, “Well, I don’t have any secret potions. It must be genetic. I ride a lot of horses and I’m into the bewilderment of the world, so I open my heart and head into the curiosity of how things work.”

“I’m a competitive rider in an equine skill called reining,” he added at the time. “I don’t know if you know it, but it’s very athletic and cowboyish.”

When asked if he would like to have known at 20 what he knows now in his 90s, Shatner responded, “I’m glad I didn’t know because what you know at 90 is: take it easy, nothing matters in the end, what goes up must come down. If I’d known that at 20, I wouldn’t have done anything!”

I wonder what he would say about this rendition of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” from 1978. Perhaps a foreshadowing of his flight into space?!

‘Getting Older Is Terrifying’

In another interview last year, Shatner admitted that “getting older is terrifying.”

“It’s disgusting,” he told CBC Radio’s Q. “It’s a disgusting number. I mean, I don’t like 90. When I heard that 90 was coming up, I thought, ‘What the heck is that?’ I remember 90 way back when I was in Canada and I thought, ’90! People don’t live till 90.’ And here I am.”

While promoting his movie Senior Moment, Shatner admitted that he had a “senior moment” of his own when he forgot the name of the movie. 

“That shaft of fear hits you,” he explained. “Like, wait a minute, I don’t know where I’m going. I’m totally lost. I totally don’t know where I’m going and what I’m doing. I had that for a moment — a split second.”

Shatner’s Fear Of Death

Shatner also admitted that he is still afraid of death, even in his 90s.

“A scary day is dying,” he said. “The mystery of loneliness now comes in. The mystery — what’s going to happen? That’s scary.”

To help keep death at bay for as long as possible, Shatner focuses on living a healthy lifestyle.

“I try to focus on the beauty of life, which is eggs, and the mountains, the horses, love, dogs, tea, [and the] taste of orange, which I just had,” he said. “The sensory and philosophical beauty of life, the connection that I know that all life has is something so profoundly moving that I think of it a lot.”
