Tim Allen is currently starring in his third major sitcom, Shifting Gears. He’s already had major hits with his previous sitcoms Home Improvement and Last Man Standing.
Luckily for Allen, Shifting Gears is already hitting big in the ratings!
Allen Celebrates Shifting Gears‘ Success
Allen, 71, can’t hide how happy he is that his new show is a hit.
“Somebody I was talking to called me the Tom Brady of TV with those three sitcoms, and I hadn’t thought of that but it got in my head,” Allen told USA Today.
That being said, Allen believes that this will likely be his final hit TV show.
“This probably will be the end of it,” Allen admitted of his TV career. “That sounds depressing, but I did (Shifting Gears) because it seemed like a good idea that would be fun. That’s really it.”
Even at his age, Allen seems more spry than ever!

Allen’s Shifting Gears Character
In Shifting Gears, Allen plays auto restoration shop owner Matt Parker. He’s a widowed father of two whose life is thrown upside down when his daughter (Kat Dennings) moves back home to live with him with her two teenage children.
Allen believes that out of his three sitcom characters, this one is closest to who he is in real life.
“This is getting closer and closer to the guy you see at my stand-up shows now,” Allen explained. “Home Improvement was literally just my stand-up show, where Last Man Standing reflected the fact that I had daughters and I wanted a lead guy who was smarter than Tim Taylor (his character in Home Improvement).”
“So this new guy now, Matt Parker, he’s more of what I really am,” he continued. “I was a design and philosophy student like he is. Now, he’s curmudgeonly because he’s been through grief, and I lost my father as a young kid, so I get that. I also have a car shop. So he’s the most relatable to the stand-up I’ve been doing for years and truly an evolution of all these characters.”
Indeed, Allen has already fallen in love with his Shifting Gears character.
“He’s an artist and a designer and a thinker, but he’s also out there just trying to get (stuff) done, trying to make sense of the world and make a living and make things run,” he gushed.
Secret Behind Shifting Gears Success
Shifting Gears has struggled to win over critics, but it has hit big with audiences. Allen thinks that part of the reason that Shifting Gears has been a success is that it is filmed in front of a live audience.
“Back in the day, this is how it was, you rehearsed it and shot it in front of real people, and I love that,” Allen stated. “In the movies, OK maybe I make the crew bust up, but that’s it. Doing Shifting Gears, I get to aim for the whole audience plus the crew. There’s nothing like it.”
Shifting Gears airs Wednesday nights on ABC. If you love Allen’s previous sitcoms as much as we do, be sure to check it out!
