The former contestant phenom Ken Jennings has been hosting Jeopardy! for nearly three years now. Unfortunately for him, however, his days on the iconic game show may be numbered, according to new reports.

Jennings’ Job May Be In Danger

Sources told The Mirror that Jeopardy! producers are no longer sure if they want to keep Jennings on as the host of the game show.

Executives have reportedly noticed that ratings on Wheel of Fortune have spiked in the weeks since Ryan Seacrest took over as host from Pat Sajak. This has led them to become curious as to whether they could make the same thing happen with Jeopardy!

It became clear that producers are not fully behind Jennings when they decided not to have him host Pop Culture Jeopardy! Instead, they brought in the Saturday Night Live! star Colin Jost to fill that role. Should the ratings for that show be strong, it could spell doom for Jennings.

Indeed, it’s been speculated that executives may be interested in having Jost take over permanently as the Jeopardy! host!

Sony Executives Excited About Jost

“At Sony TV, getting Colin to come aboard Jeopardy! was a major coup,” an insider told The Sun last month. “Mainly because Colin’s corporate home for twenty years has been [rival media company] NBC Universal.”

“It was a big deal for the Sony execs to get him for Jeopardy! and he’s definitely got a ton of wiggle room to do his thing and add to the humor of the shows where he sees fit,” the source continued. “And Colin has more experience with live TV than almost anybody involved with Jeopardy!

While Jennings got his start as a Jeopardy! contestant and had no entertainment experience prior to that, Jost has been a comedian for many years.

“He can make things work in the moment that Ken can’t, and nobody is in denial about that,” the insider explained of Jost. “Colin can interact with celebrity contestants with confidence because they seem him as a peer. Unfortunately, that’s never going to be the case with Ken [as far as Celebrity Jeopardy! goes].”

‘It Is What It Is’

Another source said that if Jeopardy! executives were “100 percent” sold on Jennings, they would have tapped him to host Celebrity Jeopardy!

“Yes, if they truly had 100% confidence in Ken, they would tap him for their primetime and celebrity editions, which they have decidedly not done,” this insider said. “It is what it is. Ken can’t really affect things except by being consistent on the nightly show and making sure the ratings don’t slide too badly.”

A third source chimed in to say that “it really looks like a massive no-confidence vote in Ken by tapping Colin Jost [for Pop Culture Jeopardy!]”

Jennings Doesn’t Have A Longterm Contract

It should be noted that Jennings surprisingly does not have a long-term contract for the $4 million hosting gig on Jeopardy! This means that his job, if not his wallet, is far from safe.

“Of course Ken wants to do this for the next twenty years, but he’s going to have to get comfortable with only being renewed one or two years at a time for the foreseeable future,” another source previously explained. “Sony is keeping him in the hosting job but they are also keeping their options open.”

Pop Culture Jeopardy! is set to premiere on December 4. It will certainly be interesting to see how this all turns out for Jennings.
