The Disney movie Lightyear was one of the biggest flops of 2022 after executives recast the role of Buzz Lightyear from the conservative star Tim Allen, who had voiced the character since 1995, to the woke star Chris Evans. Now, Allen is speaking out to slam the “confusing” movie Lightyear, saying that he still can’t figure out what the “peculiar” plot was centered on.

Allen Sounds Off

“They were two completely different movies,” Allen, 69, told Daily Mail. “And Chris did a great job doing an ancillary part. It was very confusing to all of us on the Toy Story movie side, which was real?”

“I’m a script guy, so if Buzz is real, then Chris’s version of it was, as an actor doing it, real confusing to me,” he continued.

Disney had tried to explain that Allen played the toy Buzz Lightyear, while Lightyear is the movie that the toy was based on.

“Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear the toy,” Lightyear producer Galyn Susman explained. “We weren’t making a Toy Story movie. We’re making Buzz Lightyear’s movie.”

Unfortunately for Disney, however, Lightyear was a massive flop, earning only $51.7 million in North America and losing the studio an estimated $106 million.

Toy Story 5

Allen has since been brought back to play Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming film Toy Story 5.

Toy Story 5 had been kind of laid down quite a while ago, but we just couldn’t get into it,” Allen said. “Then Disney announced it about two months ago.”

“So I’ve made friends with all of the people in Toy Story, especially Tom Hanks [who plays cowboy Woody],” he added. “So for that, I’m blessed to have these friends in my life. I love that character. I love that story. So I always wait to see the script.”

Allen went on to say that Disney had been planning this fifth movie secretly.

“They came up with that,” he said. “I think it’s getting close and I said unless it could have been done really well I know that the crew didn’t want to do it.”

“So none of us could mention any of this,” he continued. “Even when all the ancillary Buzz or Lightyear movie was coming out, this was all in play. So it was kind of peculiar. That’s all.”

Allen’s Previous Lightyear Comments

Allen previously slammed Lightyear in an interview with Extra in June of last year.

“It’s a wonderful story, it just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy,” Allen said at the time. “It has no relationship to Buzz.”

“We talked about this many years ago…but the brass that did the first four movies is not this,” Allen added. “It’s a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies. I’ve stayed out of this.”

Allen is one of the few openly conservative actors in Hollywood, so it’s been speculated that maybe his political beliefs led to Disney going with the notoriously woke actor Evans instead. If that’s the case, it’s safe to say that Disney has once again learned the hard way that when you go woke, you also go broke!
