Robert De Niro didn’t want to turn a “non-political event into a political one,” but he just couldn’t miss an opportunity to badmouth President Donald Trump.
While attending an event Tuesday for the Fulfillment Fund, a Los Angeles-based organization promoting higher education, De Niro delivered a speech that was meant to honor fund co-founders Cherna and Dr. Gary Gitnick, who have worked for 40 years to improve higher education. However, De Niro opted to go on a long digression in which he called Trump an “idiot” who “lacks any sense of humanity or compassion.”
“A college education is important, but education without humanity is ignorance. Look at our president. He made it through [the] University of Pennsylvania, so he was exposed to a quality education, but he’s still an idiot.”
When the audience started to react to Trump’s name, the actor responded, “No, don’t boo baby. This is for real. We have to do something about it, sorry. He lacks any sense of humanity or compassion. Of course, he did have to overcome the curse of growing up rich and spoiled and endure the heartbreak of bone spurs, maybe that had an effect.”
“Now I’m not trying to turn this non-political event into a political one, but as long as our country’s leadership is so appalling and so corrupt, I’ll be speaking out at every venue,” De Niro said. “To be silent in the face of such villainy is to be complicit, and it’s especially appropriate tonight because Trump treats education as a con, a way to make a profit at the expense of the suckers.”

President Donald Trump visited Los Angeles on Tuesday, so De Niro was likely chomping at the bit all day to spout his hatred. This isn’t the first time he’s used a platform to disparage Trump, either. While accepting an honorary doctorate from Brown University last year, De Niro trashed Trump and his supporters during his acceptance speech. In 2016, he flat-out said that he wanted to punch Trump in the face.
Does De Niro not realize how uneducated he sounds when he threatens the president like that?
