Country music superstar Miranda Lambert has remained relatively silent since the November release of her double album, The Weight of These Wings, but she recently sat down with Billboard music for an honest, in-depth interview – and you’re going to love what she had to say about mixing politics with music.
In short, Lambert said that she will never write political songs because music should be treated as an escape from the day-to-day:
It’s not farfetched to compare Miranda and Loretta [Lynn]. “Because we’re in the middle of Miranda’s reign, people may not recognize that we’re dealing with a Loretta Lynn,” says [songwriter Shane] McAnally. But when I ask Lambert if she thinks that at this moment in history — with, among other things, this particular president in office — there is an opening for her to make the kind of issue-oriented songs Lynn became known for, Lambert is quick to dismiss the idea. “I am a 100 percent believer in not ever using the platform that I’ve built for anything other than music, because music to me is an escape from your own reality. I don’t want to go to a show and hear somebody preach about their opinions.”
Amen! More musicians should follow Lambert’s approach. (Maybe the Dixie Chicks would still have a career if they did?)
Lambert also discussed how she always strives to be herself in the midst of the Nashville music machine and why she didn’t want Wings to be a typical breakup album after her high-profile divorce from fellow country singer Blake Shelton. And honestly, it seems like Lambert’s doing better than ever as evidenced in the video below.
