Being a member of the British royal family may seem like it’s all fun and games, but it is actually a lot harder than it looks. There exists a lengthy list of royal etiquette that all members of the family must follow at all times. Meghan Markle has only been in this family for a month, but she is already learning just how complicated these rules can be.

The U.K. Sun reported that Meghan just broke royal etiquette once again when she tried to hold her husband Prince Harry’s hand as they attended the Young Leaders Reception at Buckingham Palace last week. Realizing immediately that she made a mistake, Harry quickly moved his hand away from her.

“The Queen rarely holds hands with her husband in public and this seems to have set an unwritten precedent for the other royals,” explained body language expert Robin Kermode, going on to explain that Prince William and Kate Middleton avoid holding hands together in public as well.

“It is very clear that William and Kate are emotionally close, however, they do not seem to feel the need to prove their love – particularly when on official state business,” he said.

However, in the past, Harry and Meghan have been far more affectionate with each other than his brother and sister-in-law.

“While Prince Harry and Meghan holding hands is atypical for royal engagements, it is a seemingly welcomed gesture to show unity and celebration of their engagement period,” said royal etiquette expert Myka Meier. “There is no protocol that says they can not show affection on official engagements, and this gesture makes them relatable and lovable to the public.”

It’s a bit sad that Meghan is no longer allowed to hold the hand of the man she loves in public, but we suppose that this is a small price to pay for being royalty! Hopefully, the Queen and the rest of the royal family are being patient with Meghan and allowing her time to learn these royal rules. Once she has them down, Meghan will truly be an amazing princess!
