Earlier this week, we reported that “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek had announced that he is miraculously close to be in remission just two months after being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Now, Trebek is opening up about the person he feels has helped him get through this cancer battle the most.
Fox News reported that Trebek said that it was his wife of 29 years, Jean Currivan, 54, who got him through his darkest moments battling the disease. The 78-year-old game show host added that Currivan cried tears of joy when she learned how much his tumors had shrunk.
“Jeannie is wonderful,” Trebek said. “She cried, of course, this morning when she got the [good] news [about my tumors shrinking]. But it’s been a lot. It’s a lot of pressure.”
“My heart goes out to caregivers,” he added. “Because they have to deal with their loved ones suffering and they also don’t always know how to help because there’s not much they can do, except try to make you feel more comfortable, at ease and not worry about ordinary stuff.”
Trebek had previously been open about how depressed the grueling chemotherapy treatments left him, and it was Currivan who cheered him up in these difficult moments.
“What I’m not used to [is] dealing with the surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness and it brings tears to my eyes,” he said a few weeks ago. “I’ve discovered in this whole episode, ladies and gentlemen, that I’m a bit of a wuss.”
Things are looking much better for Trebek now, and while he’s incredibly grateful to his wife, he’s also thankful for all the prayers that his fans have sent him. In fact, he feels that these prayers gave him a major advantage in fighting this disease.
“I’ve got a couple million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed toward me and their prayers,” Trebek said this week. “I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this. I’ve got a lot of love out there headed in my direction and a lot of prayers, and I will never ever minimize the value of that.”
Though this is very good news for Trebek, it’s important to remember that he’s not out of the woods yet, so let’s keep those prayers for him coming in! God bless you, Alex Trebek!
