Frankie Edgar is now 1-0 as a bantamweight, but the legend was pushed to his limits at UFC Vegas 7 and then some, by Pedro Munhoz.
Round one
Munhoz came out pressuring and planted a couple of hard leg kicks. Edgar responded with a nice flurry moments later. Edgar scored with a couple of nice right hands but Munhoz kept coming. Munhoz stuck another leg kick and then another seconds later. Munhoz fired in a hard left hook but Edgar ate it. Later in the round, Munhoz tagged Edgar with a couple more hard rights. Both men winged heavy punches in the final minute of the round.
Right before the round’s horn, Edgar landed a couple of stinging shots. Great round.
Round two
Frankie changed levels not long into the round and followed up with a right that cut Munhoz. The latter planted a hard right hook of his own. In an ensuing scramble Munhoz landed a couple of punches. Later in the round, Edgar took Munhoz down, but the latter quickly got back up. Frankie planted a nice uppercut around the three minute mark. Edgar scored with a spinning kick to the body and then tried for a takedown. Munhoz continued to press forward and walk through shots.
Late in the frame, Munhoz hit Edgar low, seconds before the horn went.
Round three
Both men continued to keep a steady pace of movement and striking, Munhoz still pressed forward as Edgar looked to counter. Munhoz fired in several more leg kicks and Edgar planted a hard left. By mid round, Edgar had a cut under his right eye. Edgar appeared to be favoring his lead leg as the round neared it’s end. Jabs from Munhoz bloodied Edgar’s nose as well.
Round four
Moments into the round, Edgar countered with a nice takedown but was unable to keep the fight down. The round featured the same theme: Munhoz moving forward behind his jab and right hook and Edgar looking to counter. A couple of minutes in, Munhoz scored with a hard right. Moments later, he planted another booming right after Edgar flurried in.
Munhoz planted a couple more leg kicks that made Edgar stumble. The latter missed with a spinning kick to the body late in frame.
Close fight.
Round five
Both men were wearing it to begin round five, especially Edgar. The latter changed levels but was unable to get Munhoz down. Edgar scored with a nice uppercut after taking another leg kick. Both men planted big hooks in heated exchange. Edgar tagged Munhoz with a stinging right but the latter ate it. Nothing changed in the final round: Munhoz pressed forward behind big punches and Edgar looked to counter with combos. Edgar staggered Munhoz with thumping right, but only for a second. Munhoz cracked Edgar with a hard right hook moments before the final horn.
Amazing fight.
Edgar got the nod from two of the three judges, but the fight definitely could have gone to Munhoz.
