UFC president Dana White is all for making big-time fights.
But they need to make sense.
As far as White is concerned, UFC champion Kamaru Usman and boxing legend Canelo Alvarez is not one of those.
“I think that (if Usman is) serious about it, he shouldn’t be serious about it,” White told Sky Sports recently (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quotes). “I don’t like that fight at all. Everything about it is horrible.
“Usman is not a boxer. Canelo is probably the best guy out there right now. It’s a stupid fight that makes no sense.”
Usman, who is under contract with the UFC, is coming off a successful defense over Colby Covington. He is 20-1 overall and has held the title since besting Tyron Woodley back in 2019.
While some have appeared ready to compete against a boxer, Usman comes from the world of wrestling. He has shown his knockout skills with a finish of Jorge Masvidal in 2021 and another over Gilbert Burns earlier this year.
Alvarez, meanwhile, remains at the forefront of the boxing world. Since the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, most have moved him to the top of the pound-for-pound list.
“I don’t even know how many people would be interested in seeing that,” White said. “It’s like when Conor (McGregor) and Floyd fought. It sort of took on a life of its own.
“They talk about Tyson Fury and Francis (Ngannou). What do you think’s going to happen in those fights? Those guys are the best in the world at boxing.
