After Dustin Poirier put away Conor McGregor at UFC 257, he made it clear he has no interest in fighting Michael Chandler next. Poirier did say that Charles Oliveira deserves to fight for the lightweight crown, and ‘do Bronx’ has responded.
Oliveira tells Poirier “let’s do it”
As you surely know, Poirier buzzed the MMA world big time on Saturday by finishing McGregor with punches in round two. Leading up to the fight, the consensus was that the winner of that match-up would advance to fight for the title.
Who they would fight for the belt wasn’t or isn’t clear. The expectation was that if someone scored an impressive win in the Michael Chandler – Dan Hooker fight, they’d also be in the running for a title shot.
Well, since Chandler stopped Hooker in the opening round, Poirier was asked about facing the former Bellator champ. ‘The Diamond’, however, made it clear that he’s not interested in fighting Chandler for the belt.
The way Poirier sees it, Chandler hasn’t done enough yet in the UFC to warrant a title shot. Whereas, Oliveira, who has won eight straight, has.
So, following those comments from Poirier, Oliveira tweeted out this.I hope to see you soon, @DustinPoirier. Once again congrats for last night’s performance. Hard work pays off, and you delivered.

Will Poirier – Oliveira happen?
So, it will be interesting to see what transpires here. There’s no question Oliveira deserves a title shot, especially given his clear cut win over Tony Ferguson in December.
But, recency bias could hurt Oliviera’s chances, in comparison to Chandler’s (depending on how firm Poirier is about not fighting Chandler).
Further, the UFC has been giving Chandler a big promotional push.
There’s also the possibility that McGregor calls for a trilogy bout with Poirier next, and you never know. The latter might be tempted to sign on to collect another, sizeable check.
