The 2024 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards took place on Wednesday night. During the show, the country music legend George Strait, 72, went viral with his “disgusted” reaction to various performances.

Strait Looks ‘Disgusted’ At The CMAs

Strait, who is often called the “King of Country,” received the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award during the CMAs. Before Strait could accept his award, however, he sat in the audience to watch performances from singers like Lainey Wilson, Jamey Johnson, Cody Johnson, and Carrie Underwood.

Let’s just say, he didn’t look very impressed.

Fans took to social media to say that based on the looks on Strait’s face, he seemed “disgusted at the state of country music.”

“George Strait is setting there at the [CMAs], saying to himself, where am I at? Country has gone to this?” one social media user commented. Another added, “My entire timeline is just pictures of George strait looking disappointed.”

“George Strait trying to figure out what the hell he’s watching as Bailey Zimmerman does cartwheels on the stage at the [CMAs],” a third user wrote. A fourth person stated, “George Strait looks very disgusted at the state of Country music. Nobody here is remotely Country music. Just Pop music and Bro Country.”

Strait Accepts Lifetime Achievement Award

After making it through the show, Strait finally took the stage to accept the award. He then delivered an emotional speech that reminded fans what a class act he really is.

“I want to thank the CMAs for adding my name to the incredible artists on the small list of recipients carrying the name of the icon Willie Nelson,” Strait began. “I want to thank all these great artists who performed some of my songs that I’ve recorded over the years. It’s amazing to hear y’all do them.”

“I’m so glad I got ’em before you,” he continued. “So great to have you all here. But especially Norma, who’s supported me for just shy of 53 years in December. It’s been an amazing 53 years, too.”

Strait’s Career

Strait has had an incredible career that spans four decades. During that time, he’s scored  60 number-one hits, more than any other artist in country music history.

Strait has won many awards, including 22 Academy of Country Music Awards and 20 Country Music Association Awards. He also won Entertainer of the Year in 1989 and 1990. Strait has earned 16 Grammy Award nominations and one win for best country album for 2008’s Troubadour. In 2006, Strait was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Earlier this year, Strait released his 31st studio album, Cowboys and Dreamers. Also in 2024, Strait broke a record for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history with over 110,000 people in attendance at his show in College Station, Texas. The previous record was held by the Grateful Dead, which had over 107,000 attendees at a 1977 show in New Jersey.
